North American AJ-1 Savage

North American AJ-1 Savage

Entering service in 1950, the North American AJ-1 Savage was a stop-gap, intended to provide the U.S. Navy with a shipboard nuclear strike capability until such time as more suitable aircraft were developed. Able to carry a Mk IV nuclear bomb as well as conventional payloads, it was too heavy for most Navy carriers and was fitted with a J33 turbojet to help it get airborne. It was also used for reconnaissance and aerial refueling.

Derived from the British designed Folland Gnat, a light attack fighter and trainer for the Royal Air Force, the Ajeet Mk. I (Ajeet translating to invincible or unconquerable), was an improved version manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with updated avionics, “wet” wings for improved fuel capacity, and improved hydraulics. It served the Indian Air Force from 1977 through 1991. Plans for an interceptor version were never realized.

The Arado Ar 196 was a low-wing, shipboard reconnaissance monoplane built by the German firm Arado that became the standard aircraft of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy), throughout World War II. Mainly assigned to surface raiders, two of its notable operations were the capture of the British submarine HMS Seal off the coast of Norway in May 1940, and the repeated interception of RAF Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley bombers.

The Arado Ar 234 B “Blitz” (Lightning) was the world’s first operational jet bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. The first Ar 234 combat mission, a reconnaissance flight over the Allied beachhead in Normandy, took place August 2, 1944. With a maximum speed of 735 kilometers (459 miles) per hour, it easily eluded Allied piston-engine fighters. It was equipped with an auto-pilot and carried its payload in a semi-recessed bomb bay under the fuselage.
