It was also intended to test the ability of an aircraft to transition from vertical to horizontal flight, and was a contemporary of the Convair XFY-1 “Pogo Plane.” Despite extensive testing involving 32 flights, it never took off or landed vertically.

Northrop began work on its YF-23 in 1981 and had an early lead on the competition for the Pentagon’s ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) contract, which ultimately went to the Lockheed F-22 in 1991. Although stealthier and faster than its rival, the YF-23 was more expensive and somewhat less agile, lacking the F-22’s vectored thrust.
