Ryan FR-1 Fireball
The Ryan FR-1 Fireball was the result of a 1942 U.S. Navy specification for a unique, hybrid fighter that incorporated both jet and piston engine propulsion into its design. Entering service in March 1945, the Fireball was thought to be the only hope of stopping the Japanese Ohka rocket powered Kamikaze weapon. But by the time the FR-1 was operational at squadron level, the war in the Pacific was over.

The Swedish Saab JA 37 “Viggen” (“Thunderbolt”) was the all-weather variant of a distinguished family of fighter-interceptor, attack and reconnaissance aircraft that served the Swedish Air Force for 34 years. Saunders Roe SR.45
The Saunders-Roe SR.45 Princess was a multi-turboprop British flying boat developed and built by Saunders-Roe in the years following World War II. First taking flight on August 22, 1952, it was designed to serve as a larger and more luxurious successor to the pre-war commercial flying boats, such as the Short S.23 Empire. It has the distinction of being the largest all-metal flying boat ever built.

The Saunders Roe S.R. 53 was an advanced hybrid rocket- and jet-powered interceptor prototype designed in Great Britain in the 1950’s. For a time it competed against both an Avro design and the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter for the prize of a contract for a NATO front-line interceptor.
Savoia Marchetti SM.86W
The Savoia-Marchetti SM.86W was a divebomber prototype of the Regia Aeronautica that actually served in a combat role despite being rejected for service. It first flew on April 8, 1939 powered by two 600 hp Walter Sagitta inline engines. After its rejection by the Italian Air Force, Savoia-Marchetti arranged for it to participate in air attacks on Malta and Greece in 1941. It performed with distinction, but the Regia Aeronautica’s mind was made up.

Shenyang J-31 Gyrfalcon
The Shenyang J-31 is a fifth-generation, multi-role, twin-engine stealth fighter built for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It is China’s second stealth fighter, after the Chengdu J-20. Its similarity to the American F-22 Raptor as well as the F-35, combined with its lengthy development period, has fueled rumors of industrial espionage designed to steal the secrets of U.S. stealth fighters.

Short Sunderland Mk. V
The Short Sunderland Mk. V, was the final variant of the series. It abandoned the Pegasus engines of it predecessors in favor of more powerful Pratt & Whitney Double Wasps. Entering service in February 1945, it played a significant role in the Berlin Airlift, the Malayan Uprising and anti-submarine operations during the Korean War.

The SIAI-Marchetti S.211 (later Aermacchi S-211) is a turbo-fan powered military trainer aircraft designed and originally marketed by Italian aviation manufacturer SIAI-Marchetti. SIAI-Marchetti began to develop the S.211 in 1976 as a private venture, hoping to offer it to the company’s existing customer base of small air forces operating their piston-engined SF.260. On April 10, 1981, the first prototype took its maiden flight.

Sikorsky S-43
A smaller version of Sikorsky’s S-42 flying boat, the S-43 was known as the “Baby Clipper.” Pan American Airways purchased fourteen S-43’s and deployed them throughout its Caribbean and South American routes to supplement its S-42’s then in service; it was also a successful carrier in the Hawaiian Islands.
Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
Sopwith’s 1 1/2 Strutter marked a milestone in British fighter development as the first to be equipped with a forward firing machine gun synchronized to fire safely through the arch of its propeller. It first flew in December 1915, and entered service, initially unarmed, with the Royal Naval Air Service in April 1916. Initially effective against enemy fighters, it was soon obsolete and the British RFC withdrew it from the Front by mid-1917.
Sopwith Pup
The Sopwith Pup was a single-seat fighter of the First World War, initially superior to enemy competitors but quickly outmoded due to the rapid pace of fighter development at the time. It flew for the first time in February 1916, and proved a match for the Albatros and Fokker fighters it encountered at the battle of Ypres and Cambrai.
